SETs chat to people at lunchtime

(a) What is a SET?

Once a fortnight, people go out in pairs around the food courts and parks of the business districts to chat to people about Christianity. Experience in the Sydney CBD has shown that on average, one in every three people approached are willing to have a chat. On the alternative fortnight the pairs meet in a larger group to give feedback, pray and to receive training and encouragement.

(b) When do SET’s meet?

Mostly at lunchtime.

(c) Sound a bit scary?

§         Sometimes it’s easier to share the gospel with strangers than with people we know.

§         Provides a structured approach to help you actually do some real evangelism once/ fortnight.

§         The SET is a good training ground for evangelism. We pair up experienced with inexperienced. You can learn a lot ‘on the job’ and from reviewing experiences in the larger group.

George Mallos

The reality is that most of the people you approach are very polite and very courteous. If they don’t want to speak, you respect that and you each go your own way. You just have to get over that first hurdle of being able to walk up to a stranger and politely introduce yourself.

The most startling thing you learn is how biblically illiterate so many people are. Many of us assume that everybody went to Sunday School and at least knows who Jesus is. But there are so many people out there who don’t know.

Having heard so many different renditions of what other people believe, it’s convinced me more and more of the truth of the gospel. It’s convicted me of the urgent need to bring the gospel to people.

Personally, it’s helped my Christian growth in that it’s made me more determined, if I’m going to be involved in this work, to try to do it properly. It’s made me look more closely at the Bible. It gives you a catalyst for your own Christian growth, and it shows you where you need to lift your game.

(e)   How do I join an SET?

Contact your local Ecom office.

Please note:

  1. All the SET’s at the moment are gender specific.

  1. ‘Try before you buy’. If you’d like to try doing Street Evangelism before committing to join a team, that’s fine. Contact the SET and they’ll organise for you to have a ‘trail run’.
